A reintroduction of a bill in the state legislature would require canids over 50 pounds, that are killed, to be DNA tested by the state Department of Environmental Conservation to determine if the animal is, in fact, a wolf. The bill is sponsored by state Sen. Brad Hoylman-Sigal. It aims at protecting the wolf population, with the most significant being, that hunters or trappers who kill a potential wolf would no longer be anonymous. They will now have to submit DNA samples of their kills; and as wolves are endangered species, hunters would be responsible if violating the Endangered Species Act, with a wolf kill.
