Assembly Bill A8327 has been introduced which seeks to prohibit the sale of birds in retail pet stores statewide. If passed, this legislation could help end the suffering of birds bred in poor conditions or captured from the wild. The bill was introduced by Assembly Member Linda Rosenthal.
Wildlife trafficking plays a major role in pet store bird trade which is fueled by demand. Many birds seen in pet stores, such as parrots, finches, and parakeets, originate from wildlife trafficking networks. The push for this bill comes from a strong collaboration between World Animal Protection US and Voters For Animal Rights. Their continued efforts are helping to turn public concern into real legislative change.
