Northern Bluegill are often the first fish youngsters encounter when fishing, as these fish are often found in the shallow water near shore, especially around docks. They like slow moving or standing water where there is plenty of vegetation or other shelter. They are a pretty fish, known for their vibrant blue markings and aggressive and territorial behavior, making them appealing as a sport fish. Northern Bluegills are considered one of the easiest fish to catch even though they have the ability to travel and change directions at high speeds by means of synchronized fin movements – including swimming backwards. They are stocked in many lakes and ponds for sporting. The fish are important prey for bass, other larger, northern pike and muskellunge, walleye, trout, herons, kingfishers, snapping turtles and otters, and play a key role within the food chain of its freshwater ecosystem.
Bluegills are omnivorous and will eat anything they can fit in their mouth, but mostly feed on small aquatic insects and baitfish. They fish are important prey for larger species.The bluegill is a common host fish for freshwater mussels. The fish provides the mussel with a place to live (usually on their gills) for the first part of its life.
