August 2021 – William “Bill” Ashton, 80, of Mystic, NY, was arrested and charged with 2 counts of violation of the prohibition of animal fighting (felony) and possessing animal fighting paraphrnalia (misdemeanor). According to reports, authorities identified Ashton as the alleged “Godfather of Dogfighting” and an “accredited referee” within the dog-fighting community. He was among ten individuals arrested in an investigation that ultimately rescued 89 dogs. 

During the investigation, a dogfighting manual co-authored by Ashton, titled The Ultimate Gladiator, was discovered, and he was known to treat the severely injured dogs using untrained, homemade methods.
