Common in New York is the Eastern Chipmunk (Tamias striatus). The Eastern Chipmunk is a small, ground-dwelling rodent with reddish-brown fur and five distinctive dark stripes on its back and sides. They are creative. These busy animals play a vital role in by harvesting seeds and fungi. The Eastern Chipmunk is a member of the squirrel family (Sciuridae). Other names for the Eastern Chipmunk include Ground Squirrel, Striped Squirrel, and Chipping Squirrel. There are eleven subspecies of Tamias striatus. The one that lives in our region is Tamias striatus lysteri.
