In NY, the term “possum” is often mistakenly used to refer to the opossum, but there is a real animal called a possum that lives in Australia. Opossums are native to North and South America. The key difference is geographic location.
Opossums tend to be small to medium-sized marsupials, growing to the size of a house cat. They tend to be semi-arboreal omnivores, although there are many exceptions. Most Opossums have long snouts and a narrow braincase. Although all living opossums are essentially opportunistic omnivores, different species vary in the amount of meat and vegetation they include in their diet.
