October 9, 1693 - “A Great Storm” of 1693 (Accomak Storm)
The Great Storm of 1693 struck Long Island with such force that it is reported to have permantely altered the coastline. Col. Edmund Scarburgh wrote, “There happened a most violent storme…, which stopped the course of ancient channels and made some where never were any”. The storm attributed to the creation of Fire Island Cut, the inlet that separates Fire Island from Long Island near New York City.
