Hurricane Irene moved through New York with heavy rain, hurricane-force winds and a storm surge. Five people were killed in North Carolina; three more died in Virginia, including an 11-year-old boy whose home was hit by a falling tree. Irene was a Category 1 hurricane in New York with sustained winds of 75mph. Nearly 180,000 people on Long Island were affected by electrical outages. More than 300,000 people were evacuated from vulnerable areas in New York City. High tide at New York Harbor created widespread flooding in low-lying areas. Storm surge pushed the sea level up about 4ft above normal down at the Battery. Fire fighters were answering scores of calls for utility polls, trees and power lines downed in Queens.
