Jul 7, 2021 – WEST SPARTA, N.Y. — Edward Carsell (56) of West Sparta, New York was charged with aggravated cruelty of animals after a dog was shot and killed in June. Deputies responded to investigate a report that a dog had been shot. Investigators then confirmed that an 11-year-old pit bull had been shot in the head and killed at the residence. It’s alleged that Carswell shot the dog in the back of the head with a .22 caliber rifle.
Carswell was turned over to Central Booking deputies at Livingston County Jail for processing and issued an appearance ticket for the charge as the offense did not qualify for pre-arraignment detention under the state Justice Reform Act. Carswell was released and will answer the charge at a later date in the Town of West Sparta Court.
